Ever wondered how the chicken and waffles came about? Well, most recipes are traditionally brought down from generation to generation and this Chicken and Waffles recipe is definitely no exception. It’s amazing how food has evolved in our multi-cultural country and especially fried chicken in the Southern kitchens.

Fried Chicken and Waffles in Our History

We can go as far back as the 13th century, when the fried chicken was a dish that was first cooked by the French. By the 17th century, chicken was possibly the main meat in every dish and in the 1800’s, the chicken was probably the most expensive meat, compared to any other meats. Nonetheless, fried chicken became the most popular chicken recipe of that period. In the turn of these centuries, the recipe passed through different hands and cultures including African Americans who also tweaked the recipe to suit their best means and resources. It was Colonel Harlan Sanders who ultimately branded his new fried chicken recipe in the mid-1900’s.

Now, what about the waffles? Believe or not, the Pilgrims first brought the ‘waffles’ to America—although not the first to make them nor to create the first waffle mix. It’s believed that the Dutch played a big role in why we now know how to make waffles. Although waffles were traced way back to the Middle Ages, it was not until the late 1700’s that it was most popular in America. Again, Dutch were to first to combine the waffles and the chicken in a meal. But, in America, a restaurant in Harlem, NY started serving it in the late 1970’s.

The story goes that musicians would roll around the restaurant after performing in nightclubs, and because it was too late for dinner and too early for breakfast—the ‘Chicken and Waffles’ became a very popular dish in the menu. ‘Voila!’ The craze of the combination of chicken and waffles was born.
